I’ve used site builders like Squarespace and Wix before and thought this would be pretty simple.
Yeah, no, bitch, it’s not simple at all.
I opened WordPress for the first time and girl, I immediately said to myself, “I need a break.” When you see a webpage like that, it’s a lot to take in, and it’s a lot of stuff that you know absolutely not-one-thing about. It’s easy to throw in the towel and tell yourself the learning curve isn’t worth it. That’s part of learning, isn’t it? Assessing the learning curve ahead of you at the very beginning and deciding whether or not it’s worth the energy, time, and effort to press on.
Brand New Fruit is a little bit that concept and about challenging your assumptions about what you think isn’t worth the learning curve. BNF is about choosing instead to believe that really anything that is interesting to you is worth the learning curve. What else am I going to do with my time? Scroll and scroll and scroll and scroll and scroll until I’m depressed and anxious and feeling poorly about everything in the world and about myself? No thanks ma’am. My time on Earth is limited – best choose to spend it in a different way.
When I determine that any learning curve is worth it and move right along into it, there’s so much potential in front of me. Potential to make something new, to learn something about myself, to learn more about what I am good at and what my limits are, to grow into the next version of myself. Whenever I’ve learned something new, I’ve added to who I am as a person. I think it’s important to recognize that that is what learning is.
So it’s April 4th, 2026 and I’m about a week into this. And here’s how it’s going so far:
- Hard
- Confusing
- I’m staying up til 11-12 these days (maybe before I had a child this would have been fine, but it is very much not fine for me to be doing this anymore. iykyk.)
- I love it
- I didn’t know that I could enjoy putting my design skills to the test in an environment like this before. It always felt too complicated to be something I could really get into design-wise. But I am getting into it and having a lot of fun with how much I can do to make this website an enjoyable and fun browsing experience!
I have determined the learning curve is ✅ worth it. So I will keep on! I am working on the shop now and mama… it’s gonna be a bit til she’s ready.
Because why the hell is this pic blurry when its image resolution is over 1000px? And what the hell do I Google to figure that out?
